Why is McCain unable to reach out to wealthy Republicans to close the deal?

Fundraising efforts, as a whole, for the Republicans is all gloom and doom. It's like throwing good money away after bad investing. The party is evaluating how to minimize losses. Bush is their largest fund-raiser and that speaks volumes onto itself.
