Do I need sand in my gas fireplace?

My guess is if he lights it without sand and those nice logs break because there is no sand to mellow the flame then you will blame him for wrecking your fireplace. He is therefore told by his boss NoNo!. The gas seeps out of the burner through the sand so no sand gives you a flame thrower hitting those expensive gas logs. Just a guess.
